Five days........

Fell asleep last night so missed the football (thankfully!) but that was the hors d'ouvre - today the main course starts. We've won the toss and Collingwood replaces Jones and now it's started. Those less cultured readers might not know what this means but the cognoscenti will be switched into it - and probably for the next four or five days!

12 careful considerations:

3 down at lunch. Time for the raindance, methinks...

I would like to point out that I'm in the less cultured club here.

Angie - try http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/theashes2005/ - you can listen live there. If you prefer a more "formal" approach try http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/whatson/search/daylist.cgi?tmp=whatson/sdk/radio4/daylist_radio4.tmpl&day=Today&service_id=49716 and look for Radio 4 LW rather than FM. LW has Test Match Special which is one of the finest experiences from England (especially when combined with a few cold beers and some sun and NO WORK!).

Rob - I think we've recovered after a wobble at lunch and the weather looks to be playing its part during the weekend so we're still in good shape to regain the Ashes.

Yep - Freddie has acquired that aura now, hasn't he - rather like Botham after the 81 series: just a massive presence, intimidating for the opposition before he's come to the crease.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Rob. As a bowler it can't be great to skittle out Tresco, Vaughan, Johann and Bell and then look up and see Freddie striding out. He's playing a different way today too - not looking to skin every delivery but building slowly and occupying the crease - he's only got 39 off 69 so far! I think that if these two are still in at close tonight we'll have had a good day, they still have to bowl us out twice to win so eating the time down is in our favour.

Well, it doesn't seem to work from work. And all you guys says above made absolutely no sense! Can you at least clue me in on what sport you are talking about. Wait --- football ... soccer, right? But what the hell is a bowler in soccer??

Isn't that a cricket term? And if it is, please someone shoot me for actually knowing that!!!

Nog, have you read what my profile pic says?

I like your profile pic Wendy. :-)

Angie - Bang! :-) When my son was a baby I used to get him off to sleep by putting the radio next to his cot and have him listen to the cricket commentary. It worked before he was born too - If I put the cricket on he always stopped kicking. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Obviously I have no clue what this about. But I see the link above and will read up!

I can't be held accountable for my ignorance though, being a mouse and all. If memory serves, football players run screaming whenever my kind appears ;)

Brilliant pic Wendy!

The links I posted are to live broadcasts of the game, to read up I'd suggest http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/england/4228576.stm for a round-up of yesterday and http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/england/latest_scorecard/default.stm for the scorecard.

For those still confused, go to http://www.allworldknowledge.com/cricket/
which, if you don't realise fairly soon, is a joke site. It does trade on the esoteric nature of cricket quite effectively, though.
