Well then!

I went out this AM and invested in a new laptop. I couldn't carry on using webmail rather than Outlook, I hadn't been able to synch the PDA or download photos from the camera and I was working in a room barely large enough to swing a kitten and with no room to look at a book while typing. So today I've been grappling with the wireless LAN that I never managed to tame with the Sony and also trying to remember what applications I really ned rather than the rubbish I had loaded. At least as the previous PC was dead I wasn't able to try and simply copy everything but the downside was finding install CDs and registration details for everything! The upshot - I'm now back typing in a nice warm room with the TV to distract me as needed, it's also not far to the fridge for the next beer! I can use both this laptop and the aged Win 98 desktop to surf (that's still in the spare bedroom upstairs) and I can use the wireless LAN to print to the laser upstairs too!

Time for bed so I'm just chilling to some Dylan
as he seems to have been all over the BBC for the past few weeks.
The image? Calum and I went to Lydden the weekend before last and these guys are the current sidecar world champions - and they are local and very fast! They gave everyone else a start of nearly a mile and caught them within four miles (the track is a mile long). It was a smashing day and I can really recommend it if anyone is in the area, a tenner for 15 races and a smashing track with great visibility all the way round.

10 careful considerations:

Tim - I'm grateful that you took the time to visit and even more grateful that you expended the energy to post! Many, many thanks! I'm left to hope that you get al you deserve and that it's long, slow, painful and lingering.

Once you have installed all your apps. don't forget to install Belarc Advisor , then save and print the file. If another disaster happens you will still need to find all your CDs but not the serial nos. For those who don't know, Belarc Advisor also lists all your hardware and saves a full spec. of your machine. It builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware. A god send, if you have to replace a part or reinstall everything.

I had a print out from Advisor! It's just that it was a ad out of date (three years?) and it doesn't show the stuff hosted on the PC for the PDA. It would be really useful if it remembered where the Palm OS CD was so that I could reinstall the Outlook conduits but I sorted that in the end :-)

Thanks Ang! :-)))

Sidecar races seem interesting... how do they get them to go so fast without motorcycles?

At least this reminded me to up date my own Advisor file and print out. My last one was near a year old and I have added loads of stuff since.:-)
I keep all my install and driver CDs together but the stack I have to plough through is ridiculous. I am almost considering copying all my install CDs and backups and burying them in glass or concrete, in some remote part of the world, so that if a real disaster strikes I can get my stuff back. I used to work for the goverment and backups and the like were part of my responsiblity - Hence the obsession. :-)))
PS I would rather lose a few goverment files than my own personal stuff - Far more important.

See Fonzie? That's why these local lads are the World Champs and you guys were nowhere! :-) They pedal!

I used to be paid to advise pople on backups and sell them very expensive kit to make it happen but that's for others, I'm an (ex) IT professional so I don't have to worry! D'oh!

Belarc is cool. It's one of the first things I re-installed on my new PC.

Most things sorted but I've spent ages wondering why Outlook looks different. Finally realised, I've installed an old version of MS Office and I can't find the later version. I'll have to save my pennies and get a student version of the latest stuff.
