Spreading the net

Not sure if this should be on this blog or one of my others but I'll bung it here as I think it has application outside the narrow confines of education. Elgg describes itself as a learning landscape and it's another interface where we can blog and share ideas and link like minded people. I think it's interesting because, again, it shows how groups and communities can grow and share and find common ground. It has some funky elements not available through Blogger - file sharing for example and the opportunity to create closed groups (or open groups) to collaborate online. This is more structured than simply blogging but the advantages are that it's easier to find members and/or posts within a certain interest area. Many of the folk on there right now work in education (around the world) and some interesting folk they are too! Have a look!

10 careful considerations:

I'll experiment with that. Thank you.

Update on this - try out the "Explore" feature!

I must have missed something. Where is the 'Explore' feature? I've found the 'View all posts' but not 'Explore'.

Who is that person with the phone tied to her head with a scarf? Howwwwwwwwwwwwwl :-)))

Friends list -> Explore or network -> explore. I've added you as a friend but I can't see how it notifies you (or me).

Whoops! Not found anyone with a phone tied to their head!

She has just appeared under the 'View all posts'.

It's okay I found the explore feature and had to install the Java update.
You appeared on one of my pages and I just had to click next to your iron to add you as a friend. How did you link to me in the first place. I can't see how to do that?

After logging in go to your blogg page then 'Network' and you will see 'Friends' and 'Friends of' buttons or links. These show the people you have linked to and who has linked to you. I still can't see how you linked to me in the first place though. It's not the easiest interface in the world is it?

But how many hours are there in a day?

Enjoyed reading the telephone lady's Danish bit.

I saw somewhere (couldn't find my way back to it)that elgg is working on a collaborative venture with moodle. Now that could be interesting...egg noodles?

Think I need a break!

Kat - I followed the link from your comment on my blog and then hit the "Add to friends" link. I agree that some bits of the interface are lumpy and I've been invited to join a group but not had any email notification or sign on the interface (I got an email direct from the organiser to invite me).

Egg noodles sounds like a plan BF! :-)

The egg noodles bit is interesting as my first reaction to ELGG was that ELGG and Moodle were competitors and mutually exclusive, but it seems not. It will be interesting to see if the OU makes full scale use of ELGG, as well as Moodle...

I think i's getting harder to detrmine which tool is appropriate for which task isn't it? The OU have just boshed OpenText (or whatever they are called) a shedload of brass for future FC development so it looks as though they (we?) have a range of tools available but knitting them together to take advanage of the best bits - and build in some "future proofing" looks like the tricky bit dunnit?
