ClustrMap

This might be a bit rambling as I'm not long out me bed - I was up rather late (about 04:30?) sipping an agreeable red and Skyping.

Anyway. Alert and keen eyed readers may have noticed a new piece of furniture, the ClustrMap bottom left of the blog. It's fascinating looking at where people are and trying to imagine what their little bit of the world is like - I already know some of you; Ang in her palatial Bay Side residence overlooking the Golden Gate bridge, Cheri on the alligator infested beaches of Florida, Kat oop north where it's grim, GW in Watford (nuff said?), but I wonder what Botswana is like? I wonder how many bierhalle Chiquita can walk past without having to pop in for a sip of the amber throat medicine for which Bavaria is rightly famed. We know that Mouse lives in an igloo and, according to the map, someone in the city that doesn't sleep - Grimsby - is a frequent flyer (Okay - I know it's BlueFluff). How mindbending is it that people all over the world (I've clearly upset everyone in Australia as the Pacific rim is notably absent) can find nothing better to do than read blogs all day?

Keep an eye on the map my little chickadees - you never know when your neighbour might find you lurking on here! :-)

15 careful considerations:

Love your new URL, Nog! (As seen on clicking the map....)

LOL! I hadn't noticed that!

Oh I want one of those.

Nogbad said...

Well get one Kat!

brilliant Nog - and it's so simple to get (tried the old version once but it never worked)

Botswana? Gaborone actually, scarily like Milton Keynes, same age city, same scary driving, same confusion of roundabouts, in fact, I'm never sure which one of them I am in except that by and large MK is not the one where the sun shines endlessly...

Nogbad said...

Botswana?

Give us a break! Could you have identified it from that map??? And I understood that local ordinances in MK meant that the sun reflects constantly on the Ivory Towers :-)

Nogbad said...

Well I'll come and have a look Kat! :-)

I did get one!

Ah but Nog...the total population of Botswana is only around 1.5 million and an awful lot of them live in Gaborone given that most of the rest of the country is either swamp(Okavango Delta - one of the 7 natural wonders of the world) or the Kalahari Desert!

But, it's interesting 'coz all of this just shows that the map picks up IP addresses not users as such unless you are using a universal IP in which case it will record where the IP is based regardless of where you are logging on from! Good old big brother, only gets half the story as usual - fun to play with though!

To be honest I can't tell from the data on the map where anything is - the counter on the other hand logs IP locations and it's as vague as you say but when used from some institutions even shows the user name on the IP address! Did ya know that? :-)

No, didn't know that but I'm not surprised. My Nokia allows O2 to track me globally and deliver "suitable local information" so I can't say I am surprised. Names is a bit scary since I very much doubt any of the users are aware of that. Like the signs on the back of some southern african buses say: "trust nobody" :-)

The names thing surprised me too - the log cache isn't big enough for me to go back and screen shot the info but I don't doubt that there will be more and I'll try to grab it - I don't check the logs very ofen and only went there yesterday to try and find out what that litte red spot in Africa might represent.

As O2 sponsor a football team with red shirts I clearly cannot use their products :-)

just seen this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/4747142.stm - if this is the public version of what can be done then for sure tracking is already a standard procedure in some places!

I can't get that lnk to work Methel :-(

Trying again:
