RFID

I'm guessing that you don't all keep up with RFID news (radio frequency identification) so you might have missed the piece about the Swedish bank considering putting RFID tags in banknotes.

Am I the only one who finds this idea rather disturbing? Isn't it bad enough that we are captured on CCTV wherever we go? That we can be tracked by the signal from our mobile phones? Soon the banks - and anyone else who has access to this information - will not only know how much we have in our pocket but also where we spend our cash - they already know where we use our credit/debit cards.

4 careful considerations:

But most of us do use our credit/debit cards, rather than cash for major purchases, despite knowing that this leaves a trail, don't we? Is RFID tagged cash going to bother the average consumer?

I think that particular battle is already lost.

I think you're right about the battle being lost but the key difference between RFID and a credit card is that it's "always on". If I use my credit card to buy fuel heer and then use it again in Manchester in 4 hours time one might reasonably assume that I've just driven to Manchester but with RFID cash, whether I spend it or not I can be tracked as long as an RFID antenna is close enough to interrogate the tag in the cash. Cash has always had the benefit of being "anonymous". If I choose to buy a few ounces of cannabis and a porno magazine before taking my catamite for a weekend in Brighton I'd probably use cash for each transaction but if that cash can be traced back to me how can I retain any privacy?

Was wondering about the automated self service tills at Tescos and now M&S. The M&S one is clearly insane and works by weighing your basket on one side and your bag on the other, but the Tesco's one is somewhat more sneaky and can spot you moving something into your bag without going past the barcode, but doesn't do so by weight. It might be ARVID (rfid) keepig an eye on you already. THey spy on your number plate and get the details from the DVLA you know.
